Below are four comparison images from the opening sequences of part one of 'The Leisure Hive', demonstrating the differences between the original and remastered versions. Hover your mouse over old image to reveal the new version. The comparison uses a Java applet so requires a Java Virtual Machine to be installed on your computer. If you are a Windows XP / Internet Explorer user, you may not have a JVM as standard owing to the legal row between Sun and Microsoft. Title Sequence
Please note that the title sequence film is a field out of phase on the original tapes, meaning that a frame capture will show information from two original film frames, hence the feathering effect apparent in the grabs below. This only affects these grabs, it is not visible on moving video.
Film Sequence
Again note the extra picture area on the new transfer and how much better the rendition and separation of colours is, especially in the reds. However, the downside of the extra picture area is that hairs in the camera gate have become visible and due to the very tight time constraints involved in recalling the DVD master tapes to add the new sequence into, it was not possible to conceal them.
